From Sample to Shelf: 7 Steps of Custom Lip Gloss Development

A clear walkthrough of the custom lip gloss process, from first brief and 14-day samples to packaging design and 45-55 day production.

Cute teddy-bear shaped pink lip gloss
A lip gloss that must be on shelf before a spring season needs its brief in winter. That is the whole math of custom development: every step takes calendar time, and the steps rarely change between projects. Here is the full path, with the time each step takes.

Steps 1-2: Brief and Sampling

Step one is the brief: product type, target market, positioning and quantity. Step two turns that brief into physical samples, and our sampling window is 14 days. When samples arrive, check the shade, the texture, the case feel and the label position. This is the cheapest moment in the whole project to make changes.

Steps 3-4: Artwork and Confirmation

Step three is artwork. Bring your design, or use ours: we can provide a die-cut of the artwork or make the design for you. The step most buyers rush, and pay for later, is the confirmation list. Step four freezes that list: colors, components, artwork and quantity locked together. Nothing moves to production until it is signed off, because every later change costs calendar time.

Steps 5-6: Production and Shipping

Step five is production: 45-55 days after payment. Step six is packing and loading: inner boxes protect the products inside the outer carton, and containers leave from Shanghai or Ningbo port. Buyers who book their season early notice this stage most, because shipments land just in time for peak sales instead of after it.

Step 7: Shelf Time

The last step happens on your counter. Products designed for impulse purchase earn their keep where guests can pick them up easily: shop counters, gift store shelves, supermarket checkout areas. That is why the brief at step one already asks where the product will live; the size and packaging decisions follow from the shelf.
We have worked together for many years, and they have a lot of new products and plans, which always surprise me. — Natalia, Moscow

Keeping the Process on Schedule

Count the calendar honestly: 14 days of sampling, a confirmation point, 45-55 days of production, plus shipping. Starting today, that is the minimum runway to shelf. If your season is fixed, work backwards and start the brief now. With more than 10 years of experience in cosmetics production, this is a process we keep visible from brief to shelf.
