How Body Lotion Is Made: A Step-by-Step Guide from Formula to Filling

From brief and base selection to bulk mixing, filling and QC release: the six stages behind a batch of body lotion, and what a buyer should check at each one.

Between a brief and a pallet of finished bottles sits a process with six stages. Each one has a decision, a document and a check - and knowing them makes a factory visit easier to read.

1. Brief and Base Selection

The brief fixes the basics: fill volume, texture (light lotion, rich cream, gel-cream), the care story, fragrance direction and the component. Most projects start from an existing base and adjust, rather than starting from zero. This is also where a stock formula and a custom formula pull apart: one is proven and fast, the other is yours alone and needs development time.

2. Formulation and the Sample Round

The lab makes a small batch to hit the target texture and pH, then runs sensory checks and starts stability work. Samples take around 14 days. Expect one or two rounds if the hand-feel needs adjustment - that is normal, not a delay.

3. Component and Artwork

Bottles, jars and pumps are chosen by material and finish; component materials in common use include resin, PP, PS, ABS, AS and PETG. Artwork runs in parallel: a die-cut template or design service from the supplier removes the most common bottleneck. FSC-certified paper or board is available for cartons and display pieces when the brief asks for it.

4. Bulk Batch and Mixing

In production, the water and oil phases are heated, emulsified and homogenised, then cooled before heat-sensitive ingredients and fragrance are added. In-process checks record pH, viscosity and appearance. Every step lands in a batch record - the document that later lets a supplier trace a customer complaint back to its materials.

5. Filling and Packing

Filling lines check the fill volume, torque on caps and pumps, and print the batch code on the inner unit. Multi-colour and dual-fill effects, where the brief calls for a swirl or stripe, are handled at this stage. Finished units go into inner boxes inside the outer carton so they travel undamaged.

6. QC Release and Shipping

Before release, QC checks appearance, pH, viscosity and microbiological results against the specification, and retained samples are stored. Goods ship from Shanghai or Ningbo, 45-55 days after payment.

Where Buyers Add the Most Value

The stages that decide cost are early: the base choice sets the bulk price, and the component sets the largest line. The stages that decide complaints are late: filling checks and QC release. A buyer who reviews the specification once, agrees it in writing, and then checks the first production batch against that same document saves weeks of back-and-forth later.
Body lotion starts at 2,000 bottles on the lines we work with. Send us your fill volume, texture and component direction and we will return a sample plan with the timeline.
